Lake Hauroko

Deepest lake in New Zealand and Oceania

The Lake Hauroko is a 63 km ² large lake in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand in the Southland region and a station on the Southern Scenic Route. It is located at about 150 m in a valley of the Fiordland National Park and is about 40 km long. With a maximum depth of 463 meters it is the deepest lake in New Zealand and Oceania.

The lake is located about 35 kilometers north-west of Tuatapere. It flows through a 20 km long Wairaurahiri River 10 km west of Te Waewae Bay from the Foveauxstraße.

In the lake there is an island, Mary Iceland, which is about one square kilometer in size and in many local legends plays a role. One of these legends has it that the island was occupied by a Maori curse. Such stories are but rejected by the local Maori.

From the outlet of the lake the Lake Poteriteri is accessible via the signposted Harry's track.
