Lake Ioannina

The Pamvotida Lake (Greek λίμνη Παμβώτιδα spoken limni Pamvotida; alternative name: Greek λίμνη των Ιωαννίνων spoken limni ton Ioanninon, Ioannina Lake) is a natural lake in the region of Epirus in Greece. It is located with its entire surface in the Regional District of Ioannina Ioannina in the plane at 470 meters above sea level just east of the city of Ioannina.

The lake has a maximum length of about 7.5 km and a width of 1.5 to 5 km. The average depth is 4-5 m, the greatest depth is 11 m. The area covered by Pamvotida Lake area measures 22.8 km2. In the northern part of the west coast of the lake lies the city of Ioannina. On the north coast of the lake is the village of Perama. The northeast and east coast of the lake Pamvotida be limited by the mountain ranges of the Mitsikeli and Driskos. The level of Ioannina continues on the south coast.

The Pamvotida lake is fed by waters of the surrounding mountains. On the mountainous coastal boundaries are fenced, at the planar boundaries to farmland adjoins or built-up area (Ioannina ).

The age of the Pamvotida lake is given as about 10,000 years ago.

Near the east coast of the lake is a small island, Ioannina Island. This was used by Ali Pasha as his last refuge from the Ottoman expeditionary force. He was also killed in 1822.
