Lake Izvorul Muntelui

The reservoir Izvorul Muntelui, also Lacul Bicaz is a -carrying of the Bistrita reservoir north of Bicaz in a circle Neamţ in Romania. It is the largest located entirely within Romania reservoir.

Description

The reservoir is used for power generation in hydro power plant Bicaz Stejaru. The power plant has three turbines, a capacity of 210 MW and generates an average of 500 GWh per year. The maximum storage volume of the lake is 1250 million cubic meters.

The lake is a popular tourist destination in the region, especially in the summer when visitors take the ferry from Bicaz for a short trip on the lake to enjoy the beautiful views of the Ceahlău Massif ( Eastern Carpathians ) on the west bank. In the 1960s and 1970s there was a regular ferry service between the port of Bicaz and the villages on the banks of the lake.

In Potoci, a few kilometers north of the city Bicaz, there is a biological research institution with a small dive center for underwater explorations. This facility was visited by marine biologist Jacques -Yves Cousteau in 1984.
