Lake Jipe

BW

The Jipe Lake (sometimes Djipesee ) is a lake on the border between Tanzania and Kenya. It is located at 704 meters above sea level and is the spring creeks of Kilimanjaro or the Pare Mountains fed. On the Kenyan side, it borders the Tsavo West National Park.

The deterioration of water quality and the declining level of the lake exacerbate the situation for the endangered Oreochromis jipe and fisheries have let collapse in the lake. It is estimated that the lake has shrunk by 80 percent over the last 40 years. While there are scant data on the lake, but it is assumed that the storage capacity of more than 60 million cubic meters of water has dropped to 20 million cubic meters in the past 10 years.

However, the lake is considered one of the most important refuges for waterbirds in Kenya.
