Lake Karum

Salt lake

The Karumsee is a rather long in north-south direction elongated lake in the Afar region of Ethiopia at the lowest point in the Koba - sink. He is one of three salt lakes in the north of the Danakil Depression in addition to the neighboring Bakilisee and the Afrerasee. It lies 116 m below mean sea level. The lake is located with the slightly smaller southeastern Bakilisee on a line between the Erta Ale (southeast ) and the Dallol (northwest ). In the northern third of the lake there are three islands, one of which is called maraho Karum.

North of the Karumsees is the former mining settlement Dallol. The lake is extremely salty and is surrounded by a salt pan that is mined today. The salt is transported from the rest of the caravan in the country.
