Lake Lauerz

The Lauerzersee is located in the canton of Schwyz between Lake Lucerne and Zug. With its maximum water depth of 14 m, it is one of the shallowest lakes in Switzerland.

Near the southern shore are the two small islands of the lake, the island Schwanau ( 5,728 m²) and the uninhabited island of Rye Castle (750 m ).

Freezes the lake in winter, formed under the ice often digester gas bubbles that are flared for decades by the local youth through holes in the ice.

History

The name of the lake comes from the homonymous locality Lauerz.

A tidal wave that was triggered by the landslide of Goldau in 1806, destroyed the whole of the western village. 457 people lost their lives.
