Lake Lysimachia

The Lysimachia Lake (Greek Λίμνη Λυσιμαχία ) is a lake in Greece. The Lysimachia Lake is located in the prefecture of Aetolia - Acarnania, a part of the Administrative Region of West Greece to the south of the city of Agrinio. The Lysimachia Lake covers an area of 13.2 km ² and has a shoreline of approximately 17 km. The greatest depth of Lysimachia Lake is 9 m.

The Lysimachia Lake is one of the largest lakes in Greece and the second largest lake in relation to both the prefecture of Aetolia - Acarnania as well as the Administrative Region of Western Greece. Immediately east is the largest lake in Aetolia - Akarnania and west of Greece, the Trichonida lake. Both lakes are located in the Aetolian plane and form an ecosystem.

In the past, both lakes were combined into one large lake. By the end of the 19th or early 20th century, the shorelines of both lakes were densely forested. Through irrigation, as well as improving transport links by construction of the National Road 5, which runs between the two lakes, the landscape has been permanently altered around the lakes. This particular played the cultivation of tobacco plants around Agrinio a prominent role.

Between the Lysimachia Lake and Lake Trichonida a controlled channel to exchange water. In the Lysimachia Lake flows the small river Ermitsa. The Lysimachia Lake is drained by the river Dimiko in the Achelous, which west of the lake from north to south-west flows into the Ionian Sea.
