The Lake Melville is connected through the estuary Hamilton Inlet, as part of it, he is seen with the Atlantic Ocean. It covers an area of ​​3069 km ² and is subject to the tides.

Of the Innu here still resident he is referred to as Atatshuinapek.

Together with the Hamilton Inlet it extends 140 km inland towards the city Happy Valley- Goose Bay and forms the largest estuary of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Its largest tributaries are the Churchill River and the Naskaupi River. Lake Melville and Hamilton Inlet are surrounded by mountain ranges. The main settlements are Happy Valley- Goose Bay, North West River and Sheshatshiu.

A ferry service connects Happy Valley- Goose Bay, Cartwright and Rigolet on Hamilton Inlet. The Lake Melville was named after the British politician Viscount Melville ( 1742-1811 ).
