Lake Ohau

The Lake Ohau is a glacial lake in the Mackenzie Basin in the South Island of New Zealand. It is fed by the Hopkins and Dobson River, which have their headwaters in the Southern Alps. The outflow is the Ohau River, which in turn flows into the Waitaki River.

Ohau is the smallest of three approximately parallel in a north-south direction lakes of the Mackenzie Basin. The other two are the Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo.

The lake has a catchment area of ​​1198 km ² and an area of 54 km ². The depth of the lake is an average of 74 m and a maximum of 129 m. Its volume is about 4.02 km ³. It lies at an altitude of 520 m.

The Ohau Ski Area is located near the southwest coast of the lake.

The lake is part of the traditional border between the regions of Otago and Canterbury. Otago's northernmost point is located at the headwaters of the Hopkins River.
