Lake Ossiach

The Ossiach (Slovenian Osojsko Jezero ) is the third largest lake in the Austrian federal state of Carinthia. It is located northeast of Villach.

Geography

It lies at an altitude of 501 m above sea level. A. and is at its lowest point 52 m deep, the area is approximately 10.5 km ². It reaches its greatest extent from southwest to northeast with a length of about 10.2 km, at the narrowest point between Ostriach Ossiach and the lake is about 600 meters wide. The lake is nestled between the steep wooded waste the Gerlitz in the north and the western foothills of Ossiacher Tauern in the south. The Ossiach is holomiktisch, that is, it is mixed during the circulation phase in spring and late fall to ground. Undeveloped lakes and shore areas of Lake Ossiach were declared nature and landscape protection areas.

The eastern bay is occupied by the lead instead, a former Moor ( Bleistätter Moor ), which is traversed by the Tiebel, the main tributary of the lake. Drained the lake over the Villach Seebach in the Drava.

The main town on the lake is Ossiach with the known Ossiach, but the largest municipality and the district of Villach Landskron. The rest of the lake is divided between the municipalities meeting with Anne home and Sattendorf and stone village with the village of Boden village.

Flora and Fauna

On floating plants come in the lake water lily ( Nymphaea alba) and yellow water lily (Nuphar lutea) ago. Inland follow Lakeshore Bulrush ( Scirpus lacustris ) and cattails, then reed (Phragmites australis). A rare species of plant in the reeds is the calamus ( Acorus calamus ), which here often together with bur-reed ( Sparganium erectum ) and marsh iris (Iris pseudacorus ) growing. Further inland, followed by a belt of sedge, especially clumps of stiffeners sedge ( Carex elata ), followed by a black - alder swamp forest. The fens are now largely replaced by meadows, pastures and fields. A special feature in the Tiebelmündung is the water chestnut (Trapa natans ).

  • Pickerel ( Vimba vimba )
  • Perch (Perca fluviatilis)

  • Sunfish ( Lepomis gibbosus )
  • Barbel ( Barbus barbus )

Ingo Findenegg had in his work in 1934 additionally called the following ways: Gudgeon ( Gobio gobio ), bitter (Rhodeus sericeus amarus ), Schneider ( Aburnoides bipunctatus ) Nerfling ( Leuciscus idus ), hazel ( Leuciscus leuciscus ), Loach ( Barbatula barbatula ).

The noble crayfish stocks in the lake were in 1890 the first in Carinthia, which were infested by the crayfish plague. Today, copies are spotted again, which should be migrated from the surrounding streams. The zebra mussel was introduced into the lake in 1972 and has proliferated, with her coot.

Characteristic of water birds on the lake are grebes, coots and mallard. Less common are Water Rail, Little Bittern, Savi's Warbler and Reed Warbler, Beutelmeise, oriole and kingfisher. The bird population has remained stable over the last ten years.

Tourism

The Ossiacher lake is an important tourist region with a year around two million overnight stays. The main resorts on the lake are Anne Home, Sattendorf, soil village, stone village and Ossiach.

Around the lake leads to the Ossiacherseeradweg R2 is about 25 km long cycle path. With the stages 18 to 20 leads to the Alpe Adria Trail, a 690 km long distance hiking trail, in the Friuli- Venezia Giulia leads on the Adriatic coast of Italy, from the foot of the Grossglockner in Carinthia Austria to Muggia, to the region of Lake Ossiach.
