Lake Purrumbete

Maar

The Lake Purrumbete is a maar, which originated in the east of Camperdown in the state of Victoria in Australia about 20,000 years ago.

The maar is located in a volcanic landscape, which is called by geologists Newer Volcanics Province. The lake is a 45 m deep Maar with a diameter of 2.5 km. It was created by a volcanic eruption as lava in contact with ground water fell.

In Australia, most of maars in the southern part of Victoria's Western District, and which are located more than 30 between Colac and Warrnambool. Lake Purrumbete and Maar Tower Hill are well known examples. Purrumbete Lake, Lake Bullen Merri and Lake Gnotuk are small crater lakes that are fed by groundwater. The larger lakes, such as Lake and Lake Colongulac Corangamite, Victoria's largest lake, created in large lowlands, as water runs were blocked by lava flows and were filled with water.
