Lake Rukwa

The Lake Rukwa (formerly also Rikwasee ) is an endorheic lake in southwestern Tanzania alkaline. The area around the lake is almost uninhabited, but many commuters come here to fish.

Geography and extent

Located midway between Lake Tanganyika and Lake Nyasa the situated at an altitude of 800 meters above the sea, it is located in a valley that lies parallel to the African Great grave breach. Over the years, the lake experienced great changes in size caused by varying amounts of inflow from rivers. Currently, he is about 180 kilometers long and an average of about 32 kilometers wide, which 5760 square kilometers of results. In 1939, the dimensions of the lake 128 kilometers by 40 kilometers, 1929, however, he was only 48 km long. Sometimes it is also fully dried out.

History

Was discovered in the lake by John Hanning Speke, next visitor was the Scottish explorer Joseph Thomson, who saw the Lake Rukwa in 1880 from a small distance.

Nature

The Lake Rukwa is embedded in the Uwanda Deer Park, in the shallow waters live crocodiles, hippos and a variety of fish species.
