Lake Sarnen

The Sarnersee is a 7.5 km ² large lake in central Switzerland, in the canton of Obwalden. It extends in the southwest-northeast direction, is about 6 km long and has an average width of 1.3 km. The average altitude is 469 m above sea level. M., the deepest point of the lake bottom at 418 m above sea level. Level, which corresponds to a maximum depth of 51 m.

Location

The lake is situated in a ground out by the ice age glaciers wide valley. It is nestled between the mountain ranges of Jänzi (up to 1738 m above sea level. M. ) in the northwest and Arnigrat (up to 2105 m above sea level. M. ) in the southeast. Its shores are mostly flat, steep banks, there is only on the southern edge and in the northwest. History

In the period after the last ice age the Sarnersee was part of today's Lake Lucerne. He formed the rearmost portion of the Alpnacher bay. Fishing

Fisheries in Sarnersee was regulated with old state laws, but basically free. It was replaced in 1878 by the patent fishing. The commercial fishing was the beginning of the 21st century to a halt.

Floods

After the great storm of 1999 and the Alpine floods of 2005 several projects have been proposed to increase the discharge capacity of the Sarner Aa. These range from a lowering of the Sarner Aa up to two tunnel projects.
