Lake Tarawera

The Lake Tarawera is the 39 km ² area the largest of a series of lakes around the volcano Mount Tarawera in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand. Mountain and lakes of the emerged in the last 300,000 years Okataina caldera. It is located about 18 km east of Rotorua, and five kilometers west of the mountain.

The lake is fed above all of the sources of the nearby Lake Tikitapu and Lake Rotokakahi. The outlet of the lake is located at the northern end; the Tarawera River flows through the Tarawera Falls and empties into the Bay of Plenty.

The lake has eel and rainbow trout. In summer the lake for fishing and water is therefore popular, as for camping, as there are several thermal water beaches.

The lake was drawn by an eruption of Mount Tarawera on June 10, 1886 significantly affected. The outbreak killed 150 people and buried Te Wairoa Māoridorf on the southwest coast of the lake, which is now used for tourism purposes.
