Lake Torrens, with an area of about 5750 km ² the second largest salt lake in Australia, and is located in the state of South Australia. It is located west of and parallel to the Flinders Ranges and partially separated by a 31 km wide isthmus from the northern foothills of the Spencergolfs. In 1991, the lake and its shores was declared to Lake Torrens National Park.

In the past century, the lake has only once filled with water. A project to connect the lake with the sea, was never carried out because it is too high (30 m above sea level. NN. ). He was discovered in 1839 by British explorer Edward John Eyre, who was in search of land to settle. He named it after the chairman of the colonizers Commissioners for South Australia, Robert Torrens.

The lake is located about 431 km northeast of Adelaide, has a length of about 200 km and a width of about 50 km.
