Lake Varese

The Lago di Varese is a lake in Lombardy, Italy east of Lake Maggiore and west of the eponymous town of Varese. The lake has an extension of 14.9 km ² and is on average 238 m above sea level Its average depth is 10.7 m, its maximum depth 26 m. In the north of the otherwise framed only by smaller hills lake, the 1,226 m high Campo de 'Fiori rises.

The lake is one of the nine municipalities of Varese, Gavirate Bardello, Cazzago Brabbia, Bodio Lomnago, Galliate Lombardo, Azzate and Buguggiate. Larger lakeside village is also Biandronno. Southeast, are the smaller lakes Comabbio and Lake Monate. The lake lies the island of Isola 9200 m² Virginia, the local Stone Age Museum can be reached by ferry. The lake was formed as a result of the last ice age.

On a ridge north of Lake Varese lies in 2003 declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site " Holy Mountain " Sacro Monte di Varese.

Sports

2012 found the European Rowing Championships held on the lake.
