Lake Vištytis

The Wystiter Lake (Russian Виштынецкое озеро / Wischtynezkoje Ozero, Lithuanian Vištyčio Ežeras or simply Vištytis, German also Wyschtyter lake ) on the border between Russia ( Kaliningrad ) and Lithuania (District Marijampolė ) is located in a sparsely populated and wooded area, near the border triangle with Poland. Its area is about 17 km ².
The majority of the lake belongs to Russia. The hinterland on the western side is formed by the Rominter Heath. The Wystiter lake is a nature reserve and is known for its special flora and fauna in Russia as the " European Baikal ".
The lake has Vista its name from Lithuanian, the chicken. The lakeside location Vištytis is, after the lake.
