Connection to the sea

The Voulismenis Lake is a round-shaped lake in the town of Agios Nikolaos on the Greek island of Crete. It contains fresh water, however, was connected by a channel with the seaport of the city in 1870.

According to the mythology, the goddess Athena is said to have taken a bath in the lake. Another legend has it that the lake was bottomless and connected to the hundreds of kilometers away island of Santorini. This story is based, inter alia, that an earthquake on Santorini in 1956, the water surface of the lake Voulismeni to have been severely shaken. In fact, the lake at 65 m depth on a remarkable and falls at a maximum diameter of 137 m on the banks sharply.

During World War II, is reported to have sunk the German occupation forces weapons, vehicles and other equipment in the lake before their departure. Today, the lake is surrounded by a long promenade with its many taverns and bars, and is also a popular destination for the urban population to the Orthodox Easter.
