Lakes is a census -designated place (CDP ) in Matanuska- Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States. The area is located northeast of Anchorage between Wasilla and gateway off the Glenn Highway.

History

The area around Wasilla was named by the Dena'ina Athabascan - " Benteh " (between the lakes). 1915 began the settlement of the region of present-day Lakes to the finger lakes and Cottonwood by workers of the Willow Creek Mining District. In the 1930s, was WJ Bogard, one of the wealthiest farmers of the area, mainly involved in the enforcement of the construction of Bogard Road, a road connection to Wasilla. In the 1980s the church grew by their location in the catchment area of the city Anchorage quickly.

Economy and infrastructure

Many residents work in Anchorage, Palmer and Wasilla mainly in retail or are employed in the public service at the town hall and the administration of the boroughs and the federal government. The George Parks Highway and the Glenn Lakes connect with Anchorage in the south and Fairbanks in the north. The Alaska Railroad from Fairbanks to Seward holds in Wasilla. There are smaller airports in Wasilla and Palmer, plus ten private airstrips and landing facilities for seaplanes on the lakes Wasilla, Jacobsen and Lucille.

Demography

At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000) had 6,706 inhabitants Lakes CDP on a land area of 35.4 km ². The average age was 34.8 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). The per capita income ( per capita income engl. ) amounted to U.S. $ 23 485 ( U.S. National Average: U.S. $ 21,587 ). 6.9 % of residents were with their income below the poverty line ( national U.S. average: 12.4 %). 19.6% of the inhabitants are of German origin, 12.6% are Irish and 10.6% English ancestry. 7 % of residents of Lakes are Alaska Native descendants.
