Lakes Entrance, Victoria

Lakes Entrance is a tourist resort and fishing port in eastern Gippsland in Victoria, Australia. It is located about 320 kilometers east of Melbourne on an artificial channel connecting the Gippsland Lakes to the Bass Strait. At the 2006 census, a population of 4094 was noted.

The settlement was originally called Cunningham; the first post office of that name was opened on 5 February 1870.

Description

Lakes Entrance, which lies almost at sea level, can be reached from Melbourne via Bairnsdale and the place Kalimna in the northwest on the Princes Highway, which, meanders up to Jemmy 's Point, a peninsula in the Gippsland Lakes. From this headland you can enjoy views of the canal spektaktuläre The Entrance and the lakes. The Princes Highway leaves the city to the northeast and Nowa Nowa by via Orbost.

Lakes Entrance is mainly a fishing port and tourist resort, the beach in front of the city is a safe haven for the professional fishing and recreational water sports. The nearest major cities are Bairnsdale (35 miles west) and Orbost (66 km east).

Sports

The city has a football team that plays in the East Gippsland Football League.

There is also a hockey club that plays in the East Gippsland Hockey Association, however, still bears the name of his former seat, Swan Reach.

Lakes Entrance also provides access to some of the best fishing in Victoria.
