Lakeville [ leɪkvɪl ] is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is located in Dakota County located in the metropolitan Minneapolis -Saint Paul and one of the fastest growing cities in Minnesota. The population in 2010 was at 55,954.
Geography
Lakeville is located approximately 37 kilometers south of downtown Minneapolis. Larger lakes in the urban area of Marion Lake ( formerly Prairie Lake ) to the west and Orchard Lake in the Northwest. Also, a tributary of the Vermillion River flows through Lakeville. According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 97.2 square miles, of which 3.5 square miles of water.
History
The area around the present town of Lakeville was settled by the Treaty of Traverse the Sioux in the 1850s. It was half way on the route from St. Paul to St. Peter. On April 6, 1858 a township was officially established. In 1869, the Hastings and Dakota Railroad Company railway line along the place. The railway company wanted to build a station there, but since the attempts to acquire a plot of land were unsuccessful, she bought a plot of land about one kilometer to the east and set up a one station. To view this was a place called Fairfield. Many business moved from the old location to the new Fairfield. With the establishment of an independent village on March 28, 1878, was named Lakeville.
In the second half of the 20th century, Lakeville developed for typical suburb of the Twin Cities. 1967, and received its charter. With the rising land and property prices in the Twin Cities sat down particularly at the end of the century towards a a population boom.
