Lakewood Cemetery

Lakewood Cemetery is a turn- hundred -acre cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is southwest of the city center on Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet located and is considered a scenic and architecturally watchable cemetery. Different personalities of contemporary history are buried in the Lakewood Cemetery.

On the initiative of William S. King, a local businessman and newspaper editor, was formed in August 1871, a group of 15 people, which the Lyndale Cemetery Association founded. This had the aim of establishing a rural cemetery for Minneapolis, which would be permanently free from possible interference by the city. For this they sought out an area between Lake Calhoun and Harriet. A total of 250 shares were issued at 100 U.S. dollars to finance the dollar over 20,000 expensive property. Around two thirds of these investments went to the members of the association itself, the rest was sold to citizens of the city. Later, the organization renamed in Lakewood Cemetery Association and bought the investments back at the cemetery by the creditors. In September 1872, the cemetery was opened under the presence of numerous citizens of Minneapolis. The non-profit Lakewood Cemetery Association is responsible for the management of public and non-denominational cemetery to this day.

Lakewood Cemetery was designed along the lines of the cemeteries of the 19th century in France, such as Père Lachaise in Paris. In addition to various monuments, mausoleums and the extensive gardens especially the Cemetery Chapel Built in 1910 in the style of Byzantine architecture is considered landmark. It is equipped inside with an ornate mosaic and in 1983 the National Register of Historic Places added.
