Lamanai

The Mayan ruins of Lamanai are in Belize ( Central America ) on the banks of a 48 -kilometer inland lagoon of the New River.

The name Lamanai, Mayan language as much as " submerged crocodile ". With a settlement period of approximately 3000 years, it is one of the longest continuously inhabited Mayan cities. During the Classical period around 700 AD, the population had grown to over 20,000. In contrast to most other Maya sites Lamanai was still inhabited when the Spaniards came to Belize in the 16th century.

The ruins can be reached by boat from Orange Walk Town on the New River.
