Lamar County (Alabama)

The Lamar County is a county located in the state of Alabama in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Vernon. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern Alabama, on the west by the Mississippi and has an area of ​​1568 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Marion County, Fayette County and Pickens County.

History

Lamar County was formed on February 4, 1867 as Jones County, named after a resident of Fayette County. On November 13, 1867, was dissolved and formed on October 8, 1868 again under the name Sanford County. On 8 February 1877, was renamed in Lamar County, named after LQC Lamar, a U.S. Senator from Mississippi.

According to the census of 2000, there were 15,904 people in Lamar County. Of these, 199 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 6,468 households and 4,715 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males to females age 18 and over, there 90.9 males.
