Lamar County (Georgia)

The Lamar County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Barnesville, named after Gideon Barnes, an owner of a tavern.

Geography

The County is located in the central northwestern Georgia, is located in the west about 120 miles from Alabama and has an area of 481 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Butts County, Monroe County, Upson County, Pike County and Spalding County.

History

Lamar County was formed on 17 August 1920 as 158 County in Georgia from portions of Monroe County and Pike County. It was named for Lucius Quintus Cinncinatus Lamar, a Confederate Colonel, Minister and member of the Supreme Court.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 15,912 people in Lamar County. Of these, 830 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,712 households and 4,284 families. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.
