Lamar County (Mississippi)

The Lamar County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Purvis.

The County is located in southern Mississippi, is in the southwest about 10 miles from Louisiana, in the south about 90 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 1296 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Lamar County was formed on February 19, 1904 from parts of Marion County and Pearl River County. It was named for Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar (1825-1893), a member of the Congress of the United States Secretary of the Interior and Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000 lived in Lamar County 39,070 people in 14,396 households and 10,725 families. The population density was 30 people per square kilometer.
