Lambert Lombard

Lambert Lombard ( * 1505/6 in Liege, † 1566 ) was a Renaissance painter and architect and humanist.

Lombard was an artist with many interests; Apart from painting and architecture, he dealt with archeology, literature, mythology, and numismatics.

He received his artistic training in Antwerp, and from there he traveled to Zeeland Middelburg to there among the Italian-style painters nacheifernden January Mabuse (Jean Gossart ) and Jan van Scorel to work. Later he made several journeys that took him to France and Germany. In 1537 the Prince-Bishop of Liège Erard de la Marck sent him as a member of a high-level delegation headed by the English Cardinal Reginald Pole to Rome to purchase works of art and to expand his artistic skill. In Rome he studied works of the Italian Renaissance, particularly those of Michelangelo and Raphael. Back in his homeland, he founded the first art academy north of the Alps.

Lombard influenced the reconstruction of Liège, with its Renaissance architecture. Among his students Otto van Veen and Frans Floris.
