Lambert Massart

Lambert Joseph Massart ( born July 19, 1811 in Liege, † February 13, 1892 in Paris) was a Belgian violinist.

Life

Massart was born into a musical family, he received his first lessons from his father and then by his brother Jean -Joseph (1790-1818), violinist in the Liège theater orchestra was. 1812 Massart made ​​her first appearance in Liege and later in other cities of the country. Thanks to his talent, he was awarded a scholarship, which should allow him to study at the Conservatoire de Paris. There he was rejected by Luigi Cherubini as a foreign student, as well as Franz Liszt and César Franck. Fascinated by the talent of the young violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer gave him private lessons. After a much-publicized concert which he gave at the Paris Opera, he was nevertheless included in the harmony class of the Conservatory.

In 1843 he became violin professor at the Conservatory, which had previously rejected him. He held this office forty-seven years. His wife Louise Aglaé Massart - Masson, with whom he frequently gave concerts, was a piano professor at the same Conservatory. His students included musicians of world renown such as Fritz Kreisler, Pablo de Sarasate, Gustave Charpentier, Martin Marsick and Henryk Wieniawski.

His nephew Rodolphe Massart (* 1840) was also a well-known violinist and professor at the Liège Conservatory, where he taught the young Eugène Ysaÿe.

Work

Because composing little interested him, Massart leaves few traces in this regard. Mainly there are didactic pieces for the violin, how his work L'Art de travailler les études de Kreutzer. Occasionally his composition Fantaisie sur la romance de Madame Malibran " Le Reveil du beau jour" is mentioned for violin and orchestra.
