Lambert Schaus

Lambert Schaus ( born January 18, 1908 in Luxembourg; † August 10, 1976 ) was a Luxembourgian politician Europe.

Schaus was born the son of a jeweler in Luxembourg. He studied law, especially in Paris, but also a semester in Bonn. 1932 Schaus was appointed Prosecutor of the Luxembourg Court of Appeal. Even before the Second World War Schaus was also active in local politics as a Luxembourg city council.

As Schaus refused to accede to the controlled from Germany Rechtswahrerbund and thus to support the annexation of Luxembourg, 1941, he was arrested by the Gestapo and interned in a labor camp stoning, where he had to build on the autobahn. A little later he was employed as slave laborers as office boy in the district office Cochem, and later in the Sudetenland and the Black Forest.

After his return home he was in 1946 for the Christian Social People's Party Economic and Defence Minister. He was so both for the difficult reconstruction as well as for the army, the first standing army of the Grand Duchy, at all responsible. 1948 Lambert Schaus retired again from the government and belonged to 1952 again at the Luxembourg City Council. This year, he went first as envoy extraordinary, from 1955 as his country's ambassador in Belgium to Brussels. In this role, he was instrumental in the development of European integration. So he headed to the Luxembourg commissions when negotiating the EEC and the Euratom Treaty.

On June 18, 1958 Schaus was appointed as Commissioner for Transport, inside market and agriculture in the first Commission of the EEC. He strove especially to a common transport policy of the EEC countries as well as an opening up of national markets for traffic and transport companies from other states.
