Lamberto Dini

Lamberto Dini (* March 1, 1931 in Florence ) is an Italian politician. From January 1995 to May 1996 he was president of the Council of Ministers of the country.

Political career

From 1979 to 1994 Dini was Director General of the Italian Central Bank Banca d' Italia, to November 1994 he served as Minister of the Treasury of May in the short-lived first cabinet of Silvio Berlusconi. In January 1995, after Berlusconi's government of Umberto Bossi, whose party could not convey Lega Nord of their core voters why these secessionist party now suddenly sat in Rome and ignorant, was overthrown, Dini was appointed by President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro as prime minister and formed a short-lived government. Between 19 October 1995 and February 16, 1996 Dini held the office of Minister of Justice.

After elections in April 1996, he served until June 2001 as Secretary of State under President Romano Prodi, Massimo D' Alema and Giuliano Amato.

2001 and 2006 he was on the list of the Christian Democratic La Margherita - elected Democrats è Libertà in the Italian Senate. In May 2006, the center-right coalition Casa delle Libertà beat him along with other politicians before as a possible candidate for the office of president.

Although Dini was involved in May 2007 on the establishment of the Coalition Party Partito Democratico (PD ), he distanced himself from the project in September and founded in October 2007 its own splinter party under the name Liberal Democratici. This grouping, which is represented by one deputy and three senators in Parliament, is one itself an independent center and therefore the center-left government of Romano Prodi withdrawn their support.

Since the Liberal Democrats of, contrary to initial announcements, not the new party of Berlusconi Popolo della Libertà ( PdL ) joined, Dini left his party to join the PdL on March 29, 2009.
