Lamentin

Lamentin is a municipality with 15,486 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe.

Geography

Lamentin located in the northern part of Basse -Terre and is integrated into the agglomeration to Pointe -à- Pitre. The castle, which was once created to protect the settlement, stands at a bay called Baie du Grand Cul -de -Sac marin. The three islands belonging to the municipality, hot Christophe, Fajou and caret.

History

The first documentary mention dates from 1720. Depending on the time period it was known as also you Lamentin or manatee.

In the 18th century agriculture found its way. It has begun to grow coffee, cocoa and other products.

In 1920, a cyclone moved the village affected. The Church, the Palace of Justice and the administration building have been reconstructed due to the destruction by architect Ali Tur.

Lamentin is a member of the Communauté de communes du Nord Basse Terre.
