Laminectomy

The laminectomy is a surgical procedure on the spine. Here, the vortex sheet is removed with the spinous process of one or more vertebrae to create more space for the spinal cord or spinal surgery or to be able to too high a pressure, for example due to a tumor in the spinal canal, relieve.

Since it can come through this surgery to instability phenomena in the spine, especially dislocations, the procedure is usually performed in conjunction with a spinal fusion. Often a hemilaminectomy is performed. In this case, only one half of the vertebral arch is removed.

The first laminectomy was performed in 1887 by Sir Victor Alexander Haden Horsley at University College London.
