The district Lamjung ( nepali: लमजुङ जिल्ला ), is one of 75 districts in Nepal. It lies with its main town, Besisahar in the Gandaki Zone.

Geography

The 1692 km ² large district located in the central Himalaya in central Nepal. His district neighbors are: Kaski, Manang, Gorkha and Tanahu. The topography is determined by the Marsyangdi River, which rises in the neighboring district of Manang and Lamjung flows from north to south.

Population

According to the 2001 census, the district had 177 149 inhabitants in 2001. The literacy rate was 56 % and population density of 104.7 persons / km ². The largest ethnic group in this district are the Gurung.

Infrastructure

In the 61 Village Development Commites ( VDCs ), the inhabitants driven from of old traditional agriculture and animal husbandry. However, the district is also rich in natural resources that must remain unused due to lack of road infrastructure. Most villages, however, are connected to a well-maintained network of supply paths. In these ways, the trek Annapurna Circuit pervades the District Lamjung and along this route now live many residents from tourism ( catering and accommodation of trekking groups).

Electricity

A majority of the villages in the district are connected to the power grid.

On 14 December 2008, the operation of the Mid- Marsyangdi Hydropower Project ( MMHEP ), with 70 megawatts began the second largest hydropower project in Nepal. The project was launched in June 2001 with joint investment by the Government of Nepal, Germany and the Nepal Electricity Authority. The dam is located about 5 km south east of Besisahar.

Health and education

In Lamjung, there are five universities (including branches), 15 high schools and 286 schools. In the whole district there is a hospital, but every village has at least one infirmary.

Communication

Post offices, each of the 61 VDCs. Almost every village is connected to the fixed telephone network. Also there are GSM or CDMA cell phone connections from Nepal Telecom and Spice Nepal. Recently, the district is connected to the high-speed ADSL Internet connection. As print media are, for example, Lamjung highlights and Antarang available. Currently Lamjung has a community FM radio stations (95 MHz Marsyangdi ).
