Tanganyika snails perch ( Lamprologus ocellatus )

The genus Lamprologus one of the cichlids ( Cichlidae ) and consists of 19 species. It occurs in Lake Tanganyika and the Congo in tropical Africa.

Features

The size of the fish varies between about four and 20 centimeters. The body is elongated, with the living species in the Congo in cross-section almost round. Color- The most varied pattern before with the colors white, yellow, red, brown, black, gray and silver. The teeth are conical, both jaws have elongated fangs. The females are a third smaller than the males. Eyes and lips are darker, the scales shine sometimes bluish -silver, hence the genus name Lamprologus (Greek Lamprologus = glossy). Lamprologus species feed on small crustaceans, insect larvae and other small invertebrates. The fish are oviparous cavity nesters. The area is usually defended by the males, while the females take care of the eggs.
