Län

Countries (in Swedish ) is the name for a province in Sweden. The institutions of the province in state administration tasks at the regional level is true ( except financial, judicial and military administration ). Currently, there are 21 provinces.

Not to these organs include the county ( swedish landsting) who perceive them as so-called secondary local tasks in the context of local government and therefore are independent of the state administration, even if their boundaries usually coincide with those of the provinces.

History

In the wake of political reforms Gustav II Adolf and the political-administrative division of the country in 1634 renewed and there were provinces ( swedish län) created, which were administered by a governor ( swedish Landshövding ). Major changes occurred in 1810, when Finland was lost to Russia, and the present provinces in Norrland were created, and in the 1990s, as the two modern provinces of Skåne län (1997 by the union of the provinces Malmo County and Kristianstad län) and Västra Götaland County (1998 by the union of the provinces Göteborgs och Bohus Lan, Älvsborgs County and Skaraborg län) emerged.

Organization

At the head of the provincial administration is the District President ( swedish Landshövding ), who is appointed by the Government for a term of six years. The District President is the Chairman of the Provincial Government ( swedish länsstyrelse ), who is elected by the county councils since the 1970s. The internal organization of the provincial government and its agencies is now left to them, so that no single model exists

Tasks

The provincial governments have two main tasks: you are the one representative of state power in their region, on the other hand they are supposed to represent the regional interests of the province.
