Lancaster is a city on the Hocking River in Fairfield County in the U.S. state of Ohio, about 53 km southeast of Columbus. Lancaster has 35.000 inhabitants (as of 2000 census ) and is the administrative seat of Fairfield County.

A number of buildings and areas in Lancaster are listed buildings and were listed on the National Register of Historic Places ( NRHP). These include, among other things, the birthplace of General William Tecumseh Sherman, the historic city center, the Methodist Episcopal Camp Ground Historic District and the Lancaster West Main Street Historic District.

History

The city was founded in 1800 by Ebenezer Zane ( 1747-1811 ), the ( " Zane 's Trace" ) was created by the Northwest territory the road, and had received in exchange for lands to three river crossings its road: on the Muskingum River, on the Hocking River, and the Scioto River. From the country on the Hocking River was New Lancaster, renamed in 1805 in Lancaster. Already in 1806 the Lancaster was the county seat, in 1809 published the first newspaper, the Lancaster Eagle Gazette. Since the majority of the settlers was of German origin, the newspaper was published in German language, even the school was held in German. 1836 there was a first economic boom, as the Lancaster Lateral Canal was connected to the Ohio - Erie Canal.
