Land's Advocate of Holland

The country lawyer ( Dutch: landsadvocaat ) of Holland presided in the States of Holland, Zeeland and West-Friesland. Launched at the end of the 14th century was replaced by the Office of the Council pensioner in 1619.

History

Modelled on the municipal, common in the early Netherlands, Office of Pensionaris. About the official name of " advocaat end pensionaris " and " advocaat van't land" finally succeeded to the then official name " Landsadvocaat " about. In 1480 Barthout van Assendelft was hired at the initiative of the Dutch knights out by the States of Holland and West Friesland was the first country lawyer Holland.

The country lawyer was responsible addition to his role as spokesman for the Dutch knighthood for any new business to be discussed point by the Dutch States General. The office of Advocates or was ( also because of the financial strength of the County of Holland, which contributed two-thirds of the turnover of the United Provinces ) after the Dutch governor the highest office within the Republic of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands.
