History

Prehistory

The first documented mention of the Schola Duisburgensis date the founding of the first precursor school before the year in 1280.

In 1512 the Council of the City of Duisburg tore down the old school building the Schola Duisburgensis and construct a new building at the Salvator cemetery. It consisted of two storeys with classrooms and a teacher's apartment in the gable.

But because it was too small from the beginning, the market hall were still at the old market (now in their outlines on the excavation site behind the town hall made visible ) and the old chapel on the cemetery Salvator added. Even before the destruction of these old buildings in 1943 was then - was inaugurated today the " old building " - matching the 350- year anniversary.

Reformation in Duisburg

From 1544 wide, the Reformation in the Duchy of Jülich- Kleve also mountain and thus also in the belonging to this city of Duisburg, 1555, the " Salvator Mundi " from the Salvator Church. The two already converted mayor decided to seize the opportunity that the old Latin school had come down right, and were representations under this pretext to Duke William.

This had since 1551, the establishment of Cleves State University in Duisburg (see Old University Duisburg) in competition with the " altgläubig " remaining universities of Cologne and lions planned. The problem, therefore, was mainly the "political correctness" of the teaching staff and of course the financing, only about living and convent assets was possible.

Establishment of the high school

In its request for the establishment of an academic high school, it was the city managed to make the sovereign as the first Rector born in Geldern humanist Heinrich Castritius Geldorp (1522-1585) tasty. This had indeed not want to separate from the Catholic Church, but in 1558 it had the excommunication taken so that he sought refuge in Duisburg. The city could also build on three other humanists with a migration background, namely, the master theologian Georg Cassander (1513-1566), the cosmographers Gerhard Mercator (1512-1594) and the philologist Johann Otho (around 1520-1581 ).

Meanwhile, the Duke was, however, become suspicious, so he withdrew his offer of financial support. This prompted the Council to make the principal and the other teachers a salary. This could then school fees - 2 Taler for nobles, 1 Taler for commoners - share. Geldorp advertised by posters to teachers, and so more Dutch refugees arrived: Lic. utr. Cornelius Rhetius, Master John of Groningen and the Master Jacob a Mola and Thomas Gruter. The Flame John Molanus ( educator ) ( 1510-1583 ) brought a practical manner with his students from Bremen. Nevertheless, the beginning was modest: 80 students in the grammatical classes, 20 Auditore in the philosophical course.

One sent by Pope Pius IV in the spring of 1581 construction bull, which enabled the collection of ownership secular brotherhoods in favor of professors and students, but was withdrawn after a few days because had penetrated as far as Rome, Duisburg threatens to become a base anti-Catholic aspirations. After the dissolution of the scientific school and the philosophical course the Duke received in 1564 but then the required privileges.

Commencement of teaching

On October 18, 1559 Geldorp had in any case can accommodate six teachers teaching activities, he was supported in particular by Mercator. The actual high school consisted of the classes Tertia, Secunda and Prima, in these classes, the grammatical studies were completed, the mastery of the language perfected and began the study of philosophy. Was established and the lowest faculty of universities, the Faculty of Arts, lectured at the Geldorp, Molanus and Mercator.

It is striking that no book of Erasmus of Rotterdam was used instead letters of the Apostle Paul were mainly used. In the church fathers was hardly resorted also to Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon known to be at least not explicitly. However, there was already a four-hour lecture on civil law.

Extracts from the order:

The linguistic and philosophical studies should not remain the only and therefore employment shall be additional ethical, political, economic, and mathematical problems. We strive for a systematic order by way of a didactic instruction and are very aware that writers need to get another against the preference at a particular location. However, we also use a method by which we coordinate everything in the best manner to each other and thus do not aimlessly without direction towards a goal and hertasten. We draw on our work without pre- commit us to something, the last possibilities.
