Lang Law

Loi Lang (franz: Lex Lang, Lang- law ) is the usual name for the French system of fixed book prices. Officially the law is cited as Act No. 81-766 of 10 August 1981. It is named after the former French Culture and Education Minister Jack Lang.

The law obliges the bookstores to sell books during the binding period of two years after the appearance at the fixed price by the publisher, with a maximum discount of 5% is possible. Educational institutions and some other closely certain customers may get a discount of up to 9% are granted.

In response to the success of online Buchändlern, Amazon in particular, a ban was introduced in October 2013, at the same time offer the discount and free shipping. A waiver of shipping costs will in future be deducted from the permissible discount.
