Langton Matravers

Langton Matravers is a small village on the peninsula Isle of Purbeck in Dorset in the south of England. The municipality is part of the Purbeck County. The first Langton Matravers council was elected in 1894.

Location

Langton Matravers is situated about 2 km directly west of Swanage and about 6 kilometers southeast of Corfe Castle. The village lies on a hill not far from the cliffs at Dancing Ledge on the English Channel coast.

History

The name comes from the words Langton "long town" and the name of the Lord Matravers comes first toll Ravers, who once lived there, and was finally out of the French traverse times.

The village had a population of 973 in 2001, compared with 773 in 1991. The village is a popular tourist destination and 16.9 % of households in the village are second homes.

Langton Matravers Museum is located behind the parish church of St. George in the village center. There is easy access for wheelchairs. The Langton Matravers Museum has a gift shop with many considerations including etched and polished stones, as well as books about Langton Matravers and the stone industry. Purbeck marble was used to this day by the Romans for walls, ceilings and floors of buildings, from the humblest homes to the largest cathedrals. The lower layers of the Purbeck stone are used mostly as resistant module or as roof panels. All layers was used for all aspects of construction. His story is shown here in a former Coach House ( shed ). The museum, along with the village itself is a historical example of the ongoing use of the stone. The museum offers a complete overview of the way in which the local stone is mined and used. The total number of View objects is approximately 25,000.

The village is home to the St. George's School, which was founded in the late 19th century. Next door is the Old Malt House, founded a preparatory school for boys and girls in 1906, but was closed in 2007. Another preparatory school Durnford School ( opened in 1894), was located in Durnford House, this was also recently closed. The writer Ian Fleming ( James Bond) went to school there.

The village has two campsites that are used by the tourists busy: Tom 's Field Campsite and Acton Field.
