Lanier County, Georgia
The Lanier County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lakeland, named after the many lakes in the area.
Geography
The County is located in southern Georgia, is about 40 km from the northern border of Florida and has an area of 518 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Atkinson County, Clinch County, Echols County, Lowndes County and Berrien County.
History
Lanier County was formed on August 7, 1920 155 County in Georgia. It was named after the resident of Georgia poet Sidney Lanier.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Lanier County 7,241 people in 2,593 households and 1,931 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 71.61 percent White, 25.63 percent Black or African American, 0.57 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.59 percent from other races groups; 1.20 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.74 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,593 households out of which 37.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.0 percent were married couples living together, 13.7 percent were single mothers and 25.5 percent were non-families. 21.8 percent of all households and 9.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.12 persons.
27.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 11.0 percent between 18 to 24, 30.5 percent between 25 and 44, 20.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.6 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 102.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,171, and the median income for a family $ 34,512. Males had a median income of $ 26,023, women $ 20,021. The per capita income was $ 13,690. 15.3 percent of families and 18.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
