Lao Krang

The Lao khrang ( Thai ลาว ครั่ง ) are a subset of the people of Lao, also known as Thai khrang ( ไท ครั่ง ) known. They speak a dialect of Lao, which is similar to the modern Lao. The Lao khrang should not be confused with the Thai Khang, which is a closely related group in the northeastern Laos.

Geographical distribution

The Lao khrang are spread throughout the west and the central region of Thailand. They settle in particular in the provinces of Phichit, Suphanburi, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Pathom and Nakhon Sawan. Among them are a little over 50,000 people.

History

The Lao khrang are descended from the Lao from Luang Phrabang and Houaphan that had been done after the invasion of the Kingdom of Lan Xang by Siamese troops as slaves home. The Lao khrang were settled in the rich alluvial plain of central Thailand, there to perform agricultural drudgery and increase food production for the military and for export.

Religion and Culture

The Lao khrang are followers of Theravada Buddhism, but have also retain animistic traits of their faith. Particularly revered so-called village spirits that hu chao nei. Traditionally they are farmers, but also red color from the lac insect ( Thai: ตัว ครั่ง - tua khrang ) ago to dye textiles - hence the name khrang (Eng. " paint ").

Getting married was traditionally only possible within the grouping Lao khrang.
