Lao News Agency

Khaosan Pathet Lao ( KPL) is the government, Lao news agency. Its headquarters is located in Vientiane. It was founded on January 6, 1968 in Viengsay in the province Houaphanh the Pathet Lao.

It consisted then of only a dozen reporters and technicians. Their task was to collect news, process and supply the radio station Pathet Laoradio, as well as the newspaper Lao Haksat, the mouthpieces of the revolutionary movement in order.

Since the founding of the People's Democratic Republic of Laos on December 2, published in 1975, the agency, in addition to the news in Laotian language daily news in English and French.

In April 1979, the Agency brought out their first issue of the quarterly magazine " Pathet Lao " and in 1987 the first, also quarterly, English version appeared in it. Since 1997, the magazine is published monthly.

In the initial stage the messages were transmitted via Morse code. In the 1970s, a teletype for messaging was used abroad, while at home continue the Morse played a role.

In the 1990s, the technical facilities were gradually modernized. Today, the communication system works with radios, computers, fax machines, e-mail, internet and satellite.

The agency has offices in all provinces and districts of the country. KPL has bilateral agreements with a number of national news agencies and is a member of the Association of News -Aligned Movement States and the OANA, a consortium of news agencies of UNESCO member states in the Asia- Pacific region.

KPL is the most important news source in the country. It supplies newspapers, radio and television stations with news. KPL is a state-owned institution and subject to the limited supply of government information.
