LaPorte County, Indiana

LaPorte County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is LaPorte.

Geography

The County is located in northern Indiana, bordered by Michigan, on the northwest by Lake Michigan and has an area of 1588 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Berrien County ( Michigan), St. Joseph County, Starke County, Jasper County and Porter County.

History

LaPorte County was formed on January 9, 1832 from parts of St. Joseph County.

According to the census in 2000 lived in LaPorte County 110 106 people in 41,050 households and 28,611 families. The population density was 71 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 86.26 percent White, 10.13 percent Black or African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.45 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.31 percent from other races groups; 1.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.09 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 41,050 households out of which 31.8 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 53.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.7 percent were single mothers and 30.3 percent were non-families. 25.2 percent of all households and 10.5 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.02.

24.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 to 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 105.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 105.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 41,430, and the median income for a family $ 49,872. Males have a median income of $ 36,686, women $ 23,955. The per capita income was $ 18,913. 8.7 percent of the population and 6.3 percent of families are below the poverty line.
