Laportea

Laportea cuspidata

Laportea is a widespread pantropical plant genus of the family of the Nettle family ( Urticaceae ). The 20 to 30 Laportea species are pantropical spread. Laportea species possess exactly like the nettles stinging hairs.

Description

Laportea species are annual to perennial herbaceous plants or subshrubs. Most species reach growth height of from about 1 to 1.5 meters. All the plants are covered with stinging hairs which are shorter than 5 mm.

The change-constant Laubblatt are stalked. Your paper-like leaf blade is narrow oval to roundish and, mostly coarse, toothed or serrated. The stipules are up to, fused at the top and stand between petiole and stem; but they usually fall off early.

The Laportea species are on ( monoecious ) or dioecious ( dioecious ) getrenntgeschlechtig. The inflorescences are axillary and terminal, consisting of rispenartig, sometimes arranged in racemose or spike- like, loose knäueligen zymösen partial inflorescences. The flowers are always unisexual, which in most species all flowers of the inflorescence are the same gender. If there are bracts in the inflorescences, they are tiny. The male flowers have four to five similar bloom; female usually two or four, wherein the outer ones are much less than the two lateral. The extended or hook-shaped stylus remains to fruit maturity.

Occurrence

The 20 to 30 Laportea species are pantropical spread. Only a few species occur in temperate regions in North America and Asia before ( Laportea canadensis or Laportea cuspidata ).

Most species grow in moist places in forests, thickets and bushes, like in disturbed sites.

Systematics, species (selection)

The genus was formerly considered much further. Meanwhile, it has many shrubby and tree-like species in the genus spun Dendrocnide. However, the classification of this kinship circle within the Nettle family remains in the genera Laportea, Dendrocnide, Urera, etc. Girardinia still unclear. The number of synonyms is considerable. There are about 20 to 30 species in the genus Laportea:

  • Laportea aestuans (L.) Chew
  • Laportea alatipes Hook. f
  • Laportea bulbifera ( Sieb. & Zucc. ) Wedd.
  • Canadian shrub nettle ( Laportea canadensis (L.) Wedd. ), Occurs in Canada and the U.S.
