Laren
Laren ( Noord-Holland ) ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the Netherlands, North Holland province. It has 10,940 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013) on a total area of 12.39 km ².
Location and economic
Laren is located in the wooded area Het Gooi, northeast of Hilversum. The former farmers and shepherds village is often residence of many wealthy people who work in Amsterdam and watch TV in Hilversum. For the economy, culture and tourism are also important.
History
The area was already inhabited in prehistoric Larens time, including carriers of the Bell Beaker culture. In the Middle Ages the present village was built around a "narrow" ( Anger) where the Community livestock was kept. Even the still continuing tradition of St. Johannis pilgrimage to the 24th June at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist ( John the Sint Dooperbasiliek ) was born.
Until about 1880 Laren was a poor farming village, whose inhabitants came as shepherds or farmers hardly make ends meet. Then it was discovered by artists, influenced by impressionism, the environment and the people of the village immortalized. This group is ( Laren school) called " Larense School ". 1901 The American art collector and painter William Henry Singer settled in Laren; his mansion was later Singer Museum. The Berlin painter Max Liebermann has lived and worked in Laren. Similarly, the Dutch painter Adrianus Zwart.
The car invention made it possible in the 20th century the rich, and later also the less well-off to buy an old farmhouse with thatched roof in Laren, convert this to a villa, and so every day of Laren out to work in Amsterdam, Hilversum and other nearby towns to commute.
1903 founded Jacob van Rees Humanitaire school (literally " humanitarian school" ) in Laren. The school was mainly for the members of the organization " International Broederschap " (literally, " International Brotherhood ").
Attractions
In the major Singer Laren museum was opened in 1956 in the former mansion of the painter and collector William Henry Singer. It houses Dutch and French paintings, and others of the Laren School, 19th and 20th centuries. The museum also has a music room and a sculpture garden.
The village Laren, with the village square " Brink " and a certificate from the 15th century village church. The environment consisting of forest and heath is suitable for hiking and cycling.
