Macrosomia describes a disproportionate size of body parts or organs. There are different variants or manifestations of macrosomia, such as fetal macrosomia.

Clinic

The macrosomia is defined as a birth weight above the 95th percentile ( 4350 g). The normal weight in the perfect 40th week of pregnancy in male singletons at 3600 g normal birth weights are within a tolerance range of 10%. In macrosomic fetuses, the deviation can be up to 20%.

Macro Some fetuses are usually caused by a maternal diabetes mellitus or gestational diabetes ( gestational diabetes ).

Today, doctors recommend in macrosomic fetuses from a vaginal birth because the burden on the mother and child are too large during childbirth. It has been shown that in macrosomic fetuses above 4000-4500 g during vaginal birth, a 2.5 times higher risk of a neurological disorder caused by damage to the brachial plexus consists, as in normal weight fetuses.
