Largs

Largs is a town with approximately 11,360 inhabitants ( 2004 estimate ) on the Firth of Clyde in North Ayrshire, Scotland. The name derives from the Scottish Gaelic Largs Na Leargaidh Ghallda - from the slopes ( the slopes ).

There is a ferry service to the island of Great Cumbrae.

History

1263 hosted the Battle of Largs between Norway under King Håkon IV and Scotland under Alexander III. instead. The battle ended in a draw, the memory of it there is the Vinkingar center. The ships Håkon had to because of the onset of winter. The Norwegian king died on Orkney. In the Treaty of Perth in 1266 Norway sold its possessions (except Orkney ) to Scotland.
