Larkin I. Smith

Larkin I. Smith ( born June 26, 1944 in Poplarville, Mississippi; † August 13, 1989 in a plane crash in Mississippi ) was an American politician. Between January and August 1989, he represented the fifth electoral district of the state of Mississippi in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Larkin Smith attended Poplarville Elementary School and thereafter until 1962, the Poplarville High School. He subsequently joined the police force. Between 1966 and 1972 he was deputy chief of police in Pearl River County. After that, he was until 1977 chief investigator in Harrison County. Between 1977 and 1983 he served as police chief of the city of Gulfport. Since 1 January 1984 to 1 January 1989, Smith was chief of police in Harrison County.

Smith was a member of the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1988, he was elected in the fifth district of Mississippi in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he replaced Trent Lott on January 3, 1989. Smith has resigned from the Congress but exert only until 13 August 1989. On this day he was killed in the crash of a private plane on a flight from Hattiesburg to Gulfport. The machine crashed in the De Soto National Forest.
