Larry D. Welch

Larry D. Welch ( born June 9, 1934 in Guymon, Oklahoma ) is a former general of the U.S. Air Force and was most recently Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

Life

After graduating high school from Liberal 1952 he studied business administration at the University of Maryland, College Park ( UMCP ) and finished this study with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Business Administration). A later study in International Relations at George Washington University, he graduated with a Master of Science (MS International Relations ).

During his military career in the U.S. Air Force 1981, he was commander of the 9th U.S. Air Force and then from 1982 to 1984 Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force for Programs and Resources ( Deputy Chief of Staff, Programs and Resources ). After he was first Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force before he was 1985-1986 as the successor of General Bennie L. Davis commander of the Strategic Air Command ( SAC).

Last time was General Welch during his active military service from 1 July 1986 to 30 July Chief of Staff of the Air Force in 1990 and thus the highest ranking officer in the U.S. Air Force. His own successor as commander of SAC, General John T. Chain, Jr..

After his retirement from active military service, he was between 1990 and 2003 President of the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA ) and then from 2002 to 2006 member of the board of the private military company CACI. Since 2006 he is again President of IDA. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Henry L. Stimson Center and is active in the Council on Foreign Relations.
